Poetry Week x Åbo konstmuseum: Staged Poetry Museum

Welcome to Staged Poetry Museum, a poetry evening at the Collection Exhibition, co-produced by Poetry Week Association and Turku Art Museum! The event consists of poetry readings by two guest artist and an open mic, and it is a part of the 2022 Poetry Week Festival. Free entrance.

As the guest artist, we shall welcome two artists that, not unlike the museum staff, work with collecting and preserving art in addition to being poets; presenting, sustaining, generating. By running organizations, publishing anthologies, organizing accessible poetry events, sharing their own skills and lifting up the poetry scene and its new voices, poetry organizers Hanna Rentola and Katariina Sarja keep creating opportunities for other poets, building local poetry communities and therefore the whole Finnish poetry scene, all while they create and perform their own art.

Open mic

After the guest poets’ performances, it is time for the open mic. Anyone and everyone is encouraged to perform their piece – all themes and styles welcome! Please note that there is time for approximately 10 open mic performers – in order to secure your spot, please sign up by email emma.runoviikko@gmail.com. You can also sign up at the spot, in case there are places left.

This event is co-produced by the Poetry Week Association and Turku Art Museum. The night is hosted by spoken word poet, Poetry Week vice-president Emma Leppo. Please note that as the event takes place in the exhibition area, there is neither bar nor possibility to bring one’s own food or drinks.

Accessibility info

There is an accessible entrance to the museum. It is situated on the right side of the main entrance’s stairs (looking from Aurakatu). The Collection Exhibition is on the 2nd floor and it is accessible via elevator. In the museum there are gendered bathrooms in the museum, and a gender-neutral accessible bathroom. You can find more detailed information here: https://turuntaidemuseo.fi/en/location.

Please do your best to avoid fragrances when coming to the event. Creating a scent free environment requires skipping using any perfumes and using fragrance-free products, e.g. soap, shampoo, deodorant, make-up, etc. We will offer fragrance free hand soap and sanitizer at the venue. Even though we try our best to reduce and avoid chemicals and scents in the space, unfortunately we cannot guarantee a scent free space.

Please consider that the COVID-19 pandemic is not over, so please do your best to prevent contagion. Please note that there are probably people at risk attending the event. Please attend only if you’re symptom-free, wash your hands, and if you’re about to touch a person or be close to them, make sure you have their consent. We provide masks and hand sanitizers. If you have any cold-like symptoms, please stay home.

If you have any questions regarding accessibility, please contact the producer team via email: emma.runoviikko@gmail.com.

Safer space guidelines

The Poetry Week Association is committed to creating and maintaining safer spaces. This means that there will be no tolerance for racism or any other form of discrimination, harassment or bullying. If you yourself face or you see someone else facing any of these things, we encourage you to tell about it to either the harassment contact person anytime during the event.

Safer space guidelines are a strategy of creating, with the shared effort of every participant, a collective space where everyone can feel at home: safe, welcome and equal to others. In a safer space, we try our best not to make assumptions about each others’ genders, religions, nationalities, sexual orientations, social classes or other similar attributes. Let’s respect each others’ boundaries, rights to self-identify and rights for physical integrity. Let’s give space for other people and their experiences and points of view. Let’s not express discriminating or oppressive views in the name of “art” or “freedom of speech”. If we are told that we, regardless of our intentions, have discriminated or harassed someone, let’s listen, apologize and change our behavior.
